Prayer & Worship

Cantors

The cantor serves the congregation as they pray in song. The cantor shares the responsibility with the choir of eliciting and animating the prayer of the assembly, but the the cantor is often called upon to serve in other ways as well, particularly as psalmist and as teacher of new music. When the choir can not be present, the role of the cantor is expanded to the leading of hymns and acclamations.

When fulfilling the role as psalmist the cantor shares his or her ministry with the proclaimers of the word: they are all heralds of God's living word. The psalmody following the reading is an expression of the reception of God's.

The cantor's vocal ability, musicality, joyous enthusiasm, personal conviction and obvious faith are all important components to the success of leading the assembly's sung prayer.
